California Walnuts and American Heart Association Joint Funding Award

Special funding is available from the California Walnut Commission for AHA Predoctoral Fellowships, AHA Postdoctoral Fellowships and Career Development Awards to investigators who are interested in research (observational or clinical trials) that will improve understanding and expand knowledge promoting healthy dietary patterns (for example Mediterranean-style diets, plant-forward or food modeling) that include walnut consumption. Proposals may examine any of the following:

  • Effects of walnut consumption, as part of healthy dietary patterns, on health-related outcomes.
  • Novel approaches to incorporating walnuts into food-service operations or nutrition interventions serving racially, ethnically, and economically diverse populations.
  • How the inclusion of walnuts in treatment plans may impact common chronic conditions such as immune function, mental health, pain management, post-operative care.

AHA Predoctoral Fellowships:  Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2022

Enhances the training of promising students in pre-doctoral or clinical health professional degree training programs and who intend careers as scientists, physician-scientists or other clinician-scientists, or related careers aimed at improving global health and wellbeing.                   

AHA Postdoctoral Fellowships: Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022

Enhances the training of postdoctoral applicants who are not yet independent. The applicant must be embedded in an appropriate investigative group with the mentorship, support, and relevant scientific guidance of a research mentor.

Career Development Awards: Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022

Supports highly promising healthcare and academic professionals in the early years of first professional appointment to assure the applicant’s future success as a research scientist in the field of cardiovascular and/or cerebrovascular disease research.
