Ingredients
- 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 1-1/2 cups old fashioned oats
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold butter, cut into small pieces
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup buttermilk or (1/2 cup milk + 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- 1/4 cup raisins
- 1 tablespoon sugar for topping (optional)
PREPARATION
- Preheat oven to 375F.
- Combine all dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add butter to bowl using a pastry cutter or fingers until mixture resembles small crumbles.
- Add egg, milk, maple syrup and vanilla. Stir well.
- Stir in walnuts and raisins
- Place dough on a flour covered cutting board. Shape into a large circle. Cut into 8 triangles.
- Place scones on baking sheet lined with parchment or silicone mat.
- Bake for 15 minutes or until golden.
