You may have heard by now that plant-based eating is trending, but for some consumers the transition away from meat can be challenging. According to a consumer survey recently conducted by the California Walnut Board, it’s the fear that the flavor and texture meat offers may be compromised by switching to a plant-based diet. Many consumers associate plant-based foods with soy and tofu products. But there are certainly more exciting options. Foods such as California walnuts – the only nut with 2.5 grams of Omega 3 ALAs – legumes, and mushrooms are adaptable and offer diverse textures to replicate what consumers are missing in meat. In fact, the survey reports that 83% of Americans are open to making plant-based dishes, particularly if the texture and flavor is comparable to recipes containing meat. As Frances Largeman-Roth, registered dietitian nutritionist and New York Times best-selling author explains, “Consider the texture you’d like to create when selecting a meatless alternative and add the same bold flavors you enjoy in more meaty recipes to create satisfying plant-based versions of the meals you love.” By recreating meat-centric dishes, people would be more willing to try a twist on their favorite recipes. Gone are the days of flavorless veggie burgers. It’s time to provide more than just a “vegetarian option”.
