A recently published study is giving consumers, specifically those who are pregnant, more reasons to love the Mediterranean Diet. Researchers found that the women in the study who followed the Mediterranean diet, which included extra virgin olive oil and walnuts, during pregnancy had improved cognitive and social abilities in their two-year-old children, compared with children whose mothers did not follow the diet. The setting and resources of this study should be considered to avoid extrapolating the findings to other populations. The interventions within the study were time intensive and may not be applicable for some pregnant individuals. These results need replication in further randomized clinical trials. Learn more
