Considering an estimated 39,510 women will die from breast cancer and an estimated 226,870 new cases will be diagnosed in the US in 2012, many women are actively looking for ways to help defend their health.1 October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a great time to highlight some of the diet and lifestyle changes that greatly impact overall health, as well as the progression of the disease.
As natural defenders of the human body, walnuts have recently shown promise in preliminary cancer research on animals. Recent findings conducted by Dr. Elaine Hardman at Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, found that the risk of breast cancer dropped significantly in mice when their regular diet included a modest amount of walnuts. The study reported a 40% reduction in tumor incidence and a 44% reduction in multiplicity compared to mice not exposed to walnuts. Although research has not confirmed these finding in humans, the results are exciting. Hardman says "Food is important medicine in our diet. What we put into our bodies makes a big difference – it determines how the body functions, our reaction to illness and health."
