Educating Shoppers - California Walnuts

Shopper Insights

Educating Shoppers

Our research shows that California walnut sales increases can be effectively achieved in two ways: attracting new users, and increasing consumption amongst current users

76% of shoppers store walnuts in their pantry at home versus only 23% in refrigerator or freezer.2

INSIGHT

Consumers do not understand that walnuts’ high omega-3 ALA content (2.5g/oz.) makes them more perishable than other nuts.

SALES GROWTH IMPLICATION

Storing walnuts in an airtight container in refrigerator or freezer will help to preserve good omega-3 fats after opening the original package, which will increase shopper satisfaction with the purchase.

Only 17% of shoppers are familiar with essential plant-based omega-3 ALA.2

INSIGHT

While many consumers are familiar with the concept of “good fats”, far fewer understand about plant-based good fats and the omega-3 ALA in walnuts.

SALES GROWTH IMPLICATION

Educate shoppers on plant-based good fats to increase interest in California walnuts.  Capitalize on social media and use signage in-store, as well as incorporating the activities of retail dietitians wherever possibleLearn more.
