2023 California Walnut Industry Crop Estimate Update
2023 CROP UPDATE AS OF JAN 11, 2024. As of Dec 31, the industry has reported a preliminary total of 799,307 tons received by handlers, which represents the largest harvested crop for the California industry. Exceptional weather for the entire 2023 season, along with more high-density acreage coming into production, account for some of the difference between the USDA crop estimate (taken in July/August) versus the actual crop reported by Handlers. The final crop statistic will be released early February.
2023 CROP UPDATE AS OF OCT 4, 2023. The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service’s (NASS) has lowered the 2023/2024 crop estimate down to 760,000 tons (30,000-ton reduction). This is due to a restatement of producing acres down to 375,000, based on information the CWB received from Land IQ and forwarded to USDA NASS. This crop estimate does not take into consideration acres that appear to be abandoned or stressed, which could lower the crop size further. Read the full estimate.
